Course Overview:
This course is designed to MEET and EXCEED the essential and core subject area content expectations as defined in the Michigan Merit Curriculum Course/Credit Requirements for Chemistry. Topics included are: matter and change, scientific measurement, problem solving in chemistry, atomic structure and the periodic table, chemical names and formulas, chemical quantities, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, the behavior of gases, electrons in atoms, chemical periodicity, ionic bonding and ionic compounds, covalent bonding, solutions, acids and bases, neutralization, oxidation-reduction reactions, electrochemistry, hydrocarbon compounds, functional groups and organic reactions, and nuclear chemistry.

Attendance:
ATTENDANCE is essential! MAKE-UP work is the responsibility of the STUDENT. Work must be handed in the day after returning from and excused absence. For longer absences, it is the duty of the student to make arrangements with the teacher to discuss acceptable late homework due dates. Unexcused absences will result in a zero for the day.
Homework:
Students are expected to complete ALL homework assignments for optimum learning. Homework will not be graded according to the number of correct problems on each assignment, but rather on whether the student has made a sincere effort to work each problem and the success on these attempts. Late homework WILL NOT be accepted.
Assessment:
TESTS and QUIZZES will be given throughout each marking period. Test will complete each chapter and will be announced well in advance. Quizzes may be given at any time.
If a student is absent on a test day, the test will be made up the day the student returns to class. In the event a student is absent on a review day, the STUDENT is responsible to review the material on his/her own and take the test on the scheduled test day.

Cheating:
Any student caught cheating will automatically FAIL that test, quiz, etc. Second time cheating offenses will result in failing the class. Do not put YOURSELF in this situation

Technology and Computer Software:
Students will be required to use a calculator capable of scientific notation data entry as there are many times when problem solving/unit conversions will require this capability. The use of calculators is not a major focus for the class; however without a calculator, students will be at a distinct disadvantage.
The classroom instruction will include the use of educational technology to aid in the teaching methodology.

Class Organization:
Review/Answer questions on homework
Students may work on other problems as long as they remain quiet and not distracting others.
Presentation of new material
Generally cover concepts will be covered on the chalkboard or overhead. It needs to be especially quiet during this time so others have a sound chance of understanding the new material.
Time will be given to work on assignments and/or finish explanation of new material.
On assignments, students may work together as long as they remain relatively quiet and respectful of other students. During this time, I will walk around the room and assist students encountering difficulties.

Common sense, courtesy, and good taste shall be standards by which all student behavior will be evaluated. Any conduct which results in the disruption of normal classroom activities will not be permitted and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. Students are given a choice: Follow the rules and enjoy the rewards, or misbehave and accept the consequences.
Classroom Rules:
1. Be on time and be prepared: students are to be seated in the classroom equipped with the appropriate tools (pencil,
notebook, etc.) before the bell starts to ring.
2. Students are to remain in their seats.
3. Always listen when others are talking.
4. Demonstrate respect for yourself, others students, and property.
5. There will be no talking at all during a test or quiz.
6. Gum or candy must be kept out of sight.
7. Nobody is allowed out of class for any reason except for an emergency.
Penalties for violating classroom rules and hampering learning:
